Hmmm…. I wouldn’t say these renderings show a design that is inspired. Certainly my design expectations for 21c are high. Below is a [hopefully] early rendering of the hotel and museum portion taken directly from the 21c website.

map - Rare south facing unit is best floor plan in building. Lots of customizations including bench seating, storage, and wired for projection. Polished concrete floors, soaring 11 foot ceilings, large arched windows. Great during SXSW. An amazing one-of-a-kind space in downtown Austin's entertainment district.

Compared to the original rendering this building looks horrible. Not only did they move this project from dead downtown to the east side of downtown, but the killed the condo tower, and the hotel looks like it was something designed to be on the UT campus in the late 70’s.
The redesign and movement of this project are stunning, and just goes to show how much this economic downturn is affecting cities even as strong as austin.
